Hi, I'm David Watts, Newark Liberal Democrats parliamentary candidate. Recent opinion polls by Survation and YouGov both have us in second place here, the only party who can challenge the Conservatives.
In the next election the message from the Liberal Democrats will be clear - stop Brexit and Save the World.
We need to stop Brexit. The UK will suffer for decades if we crash out without a deal, and there is no deal as good as the one that we have at the moment. Avoiding this is crucial for our country. This election isn't just about Brexit though. We face a very real climate emergency that can no longer be ignored. I am inspired by the work of Greta Thunberg but it should not be necessary for teenagers to tell the rest of us what needs to be done. We must make the changes necessary now to ensure that we avoid global warming. I am a committed environmentalist and am a member of the Green Liberal Democrats, a campaigning group within the party designed to ensure that we keep environmental issues as our number one priority.
In the last general election Newark was the best result for the Liberal Democrats anywhere in Nottinghamshire. Since then the party's fortunes have rocketed as more and more people have come to realise that we are the one clear voice for Remain. In 2019 we had the best results ever for the Lib Dems in the EU elections and more than 700 new Lib Dem councillors were elected in the local elections. Our parliamentary party has increased by 50% since the last general election, as we have won by elections and attracted moderate MP's from both the Labour and Conservative Parties. More people are now members of the Liberal Democrats than ever before. We go into the next election with clear policies and a party fully energised to campaign for what we believe in, and seats like Newark are exactly those that we are now looking to win.
By profession I am a solicitor for a Nottinghamshire based firm, specialising in legal aid work. I am proud that my firm and my career are all about helping those on the margins of society, the poorest and least able to look after themselves. I am also a local councillor representing my village and chair the planning committee on my council, as well as being the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats.
Away from politics and work I'm a keen musician, playing the guitar and piano, and am a fan of most sports. I'm married to Gill and we have two children, together with a whole host of pets.
To be successful in this election we need as much help as possible. If you would like to volunteer at all please use the form on this website to get in touch. Every bit of help is really appreciated and can make a genuine difference to whether or not we have a Liberal Democrat MP in Newark after the next election.
